Title: The Atom Smasher
Description: Knowledge vs. Human Life

big305 - September 11, 2008 12:01 PM (GMT)
Ok, in Switzerland, scientists have made a 17 mile wide Atom Smasher. What it is is that they make a 17 mile wide circle and at on end they put two atoms. Than, they launch the two atoms at superspeed and they want them to end up at the other end of the circl and smash together. They recently performed the experiment, but it failed, and there going to ty again. This experiment can actually answer all our questions about how the universe was created.

One thing that I think is stupid is that this thing is so powerful, that it might make a black hole in the Earth, and destroy it. They said if it does happen, that the black hole will kill us all in 4 years. WHY ARE THEY STILL DOING THIS EXPERIMENT? ARE THEY WILLING TO RISK ALL OF HUMANITY TO AN EXPERIMENT THAT IS NOT REALLY IMPORTANT??

Hmm..this is kind of interesting. whatever the case be, I hope that they stop the experiment now before they do something stupid. they should do this out in space away from earth lol. here is more information if you care to read it.

i saw that too.

i doubt a black whole would be created.

you know, this would be an awsome movie idea, the next 28days later, called

waiting 4 years. lol

within in 1 year we better find a planet to live on once they screw this one up, more than we already have =\.

this, is acctuly starting to confuse me,

if we could learn to control what they call "dark matter"

[""dark matter" and "dark energy" that make up more than 96 percent of the universe"] -cnn.

could we be able to control weather, fire, water, and space.. it could be like that show...

ermm..
avatar? (with the fire people and water people?)

that would be neat =]

Rofl, I read this one in the news. All the people were freaking out about nothing.

Nothing will happen. Some gardener got in the papers saying there was a big chance there would be a wormhole and then aliens would use it to come to earth.

I laugh at you people thinking it is really dangerous

if you watch the news, or read the news im sure you have seen this.

They want to do what?

blow up atoms?.

now i didnt pay attention in my science class (thats pretty much why i failed.) but i do remember what happens you break an atom.. (remember Hiroshima, yeh i thought so.) BOOM.

Now they say that there is a chance that it will make a black hole. (the same odds as winning the lottery)
thats just stupid, if this happens we have 4 years till its consumed. WHAT! so i guess that means that the astronomers better find a new planet for us to screw up soon.

thats about all i can rant on for now.

That would be neat. And yes I have watched that show. Not my favorite but its good and that will be so cool to control that stuff. Although I don't think theres much of a chance of making a black hole, should we take the risk? And if so, what planet should we go to? Mars? Saturn's moon (I forgot its name)? I think mars would be the more reasonable planet for us. Although the atmosphere is very thin. Thinner than Earth's atmosphere, which is really saying something.

It was only a matter of time before this was posted..everyone's talking about it!

There was a good article titled Why the world won't end on Sept 10th..Can't find it now though. It basically said..it can be powerful but it will be on low and they won't be 'smashing' particles or whatever into each other. And why would they let them do such a thing if it might end the world.

lol Quite true. Otherwise the injunction would have been granted!

big305 - September 12, 2008 09:01 PM (GMT)
They now say the chance of it actually making a black hole is the same chance as winning the lotto. So theres a pretty small chance of it making a black hole. So we shouldn't get hyped up but we should listen in on it.

-tiGz- - September 12, 2008 09:03 PM (GMT)
We should probably stop putting the lottery on too eh lol.

big305 - September 12, 2008 09:05 PM (GMT)
lol Yea. Well that is a pretty small chance but I don't know if we should take the chance. If we do, well, we're going to have to adapt to mars or die in a horrible death.

Gerjen - September 13, 2008 10:28 AM (GMT)
Its not like you'll notice it if it kills us.

big305 - October 7, 2008 11:48 AM (GMT)
A black hole? You would notice it. They said if a black hole got near us that it will suck us up. They said first you fingers would come off, than your hands, arms, toes, feet, legs, heads, and than eventually your whole body. Pretty dramatic and painful death huh?

Wrong. The chance is infinitely lower than winning the lottery. The chance is zero.

I wrote about this on my blog some time back: http://copache.wordpress.com/2008/04/04/re...-not-dangerous/

Read it carefully and try to understand it. I know it can be hard with your mentality, but you'll get it eventually. Then you won't be as gullible.

Uh. No. This experiment (and others like it) is launching two particles at near light speed and gauging the reaction. Though it lasts much less than a billionth of a second, we can get a wealth of data from it. Some of our questions will be answered, but not nearly enough. The puzzle of the God Particle, for instance, the Higgs-Boson is likely to be solved.

In the 1960’s theoretical particle physicists were working on the Standard Model. One of the key aspects of these equations was that they were locally gauge invariant, which basically means that if one performs a gauge transformation on the fields, the form of the original equation stays the same. The issue was that the W and Z, along with other particles did not have mass according to these equations. Many different attempts were made to put mass into the equations, most notably in the form of a mass term. It was however found that the addition of a mass term by hand would break the gauge invariance, and we cant have that. So, that is where the Higgs field came into play. When it was added into the standard model and the machinery worked though, the particles acquired mass terms in the end. The beautiful part is that this was done without violating gauge invariance. So in essence, the Higgs particle would add credence to the theory that a Higgs field, a field with a non zero vacuum expectation value, is responsible for the mass property of matter.

What occurred in early September was actually a one-way test of the LHC. However, a component ended up breaking, and it now goes online in 2009.
