Title: Seatbelts
Description: Are they safe or just as hazardous?
Olivia - March 11, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
Seatbelts.
We're all supposed to buckle up because it's the right thing to do, and the safe thing to do.
But...what if, let's say.
You're driving down the road and you go around a turn, but oversteer and end up flipping it. It bursts into flames...and your seatbelt somehow won't come undone. Are they safe then? (true story...it happened to someone at my school when I was a freshman. He died...)
It's a controversial thing, really.
Personally, I think they are safe because you never know when you could get in an accident and fly through the windshield or something.
What do you all think?

I've heard a simular story where a whole family burnt to death except one girl who didn't have a seatbelt and was thrown through the window to safety.
But i guess in most cases the seatbelt is safest.

It's all about the roll of the dice when you think about your life.

Always, always.
Boy scout motto, be prepared.
I keep a rescue tool in my center console.
Its a seatbelt cutter/window punch. Seatbelts will get stuck, doors will not open. Expect the worst, wish for the best.
They're cheap, like 6 or 7 bucks...sell em at target and such. Pick one up...may save your life one day.

Usually, seat belts don't always get stuck. Plus, like Chris said if you have the right tools, you're safe. The seat belt saved that kid in Liv's story from dying right at the crash. If he/she had a seat belt cutter, or the seat belt didn't get stuck they would be safe.

The risk of not having a seatbelt overweeningly outweighs the "risks" of wearing a seatbelt. Had I been the parents of the child, I would have launched an investigation against the seatbelt manufacturer.

True, but there's always a positive and negative way.
They're good because they can save your life.
They're bad because they can get stuck and get jammed and can stall you from an accident or something.
But, you can't always just take that risk and say, "Yeah, I'm not wearing it today. I'll be fine." Few minutes later you fly through your windshield. :\

My uncle was going down the interstate when he his a patch of ice and did rolls about 100 yards down the interstate.
He wasn't wearing his seatbelt and was thrown through the back window. If he had been wearing it he would have died.

Sounds like a similar story my ex, Josh, had.
His mom was driving and didn't pay attention to the road. She wasn't wearing her seatbelt either. She flew into the passenger seat, and her car rammed into a tree on the drivers side.

I think you should always use a seat belt & I always do (at least 90% of the time). If you are worried about not being able to get out of the vehicle because of the seat belt then i suggest that you carry a pocket knife with you so that you can cut through the seat belt.

I literally don't even notice when I get in the car, and automatically put mine on.
I guess if I got hurt while not wearing my seatbelt, I would be more mad then if I got hurt while wearing it.

I feel that there are the pros and cons to wearing a seatbelt. As the example Olivia gave, it could cause you to be trapped.
I just lost a friend last night from a car accident. She was going around a curve and crossed over the median and tried to correct it, and in the process swerved off the road and hit a tree. As she was correcting the swerve she ran off the road and went airborne and struck the tree. She was ejected from the car because she was not wearing her seatbelt. Had she been wearing it her life probably could've been saved just like the passenger in the car.
So I believe wearing a seatbelt is better more times than not wearing one.

The chances of a seat belt saving your life and stopping you being thrown out of the car to your death are far greater than you getting stuck in the car due to a faulty seatbelt. So yes they are a good idea, definitely.
