Title: Leaving The Computer On
FaStBuLLeT - June 20, 2007 04:11 AM (GMT)
Well sometimes at night I'm too lazy to shut down my computer and i just leave it on overnight. I'm guessing this is not a good thing because my cousin left his computer on at night and had viruses the next day he went on his computer.
Just some opinions if it really matters.

Leaving your computer on isn't bad. I can't even remember the last time I shut my computer down. I've only restarted it. The last time it was actually shut down was when I moved everything down stairs two months ago.
Viruses on his computer had nothing to do with leaving the computer on. He obviously had them before he went to bed. Viruses don't know when you're sleeping. ;)
FaStBuLLeT - June 20, 2007 04:43 AM (GMT)
Lol, i know, i was just asking if there was any possible way viruses can get in your computer when your not there.
Roi - June 20, 2007 07:25 AM (GMT)
Unless some one found a way to stream them in, no. In which case I'd reccomend you scan for stuff like that.
robshoy - June 20, 2007 11:31 AM (GMT)
It's actually better for the computer to stay on for longer periods of time with just a restart or two instead of being turned on and off every night. The circuitry doesn't like that.
Ian - June 20, 2007 12:59 PM (GMT)
I leave mine on all the time. :P
FaStBuLLeT - June 20, 2007 03:11 PM (GMT)
Ok, so not i know i'm not alone. Good, lol.
Ian - June 20, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)

Mines on at all times unless a power outage, big storm, or updates force me to turn it off.
Maveus - June 20, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
I turn mine off every night, or put it on stand-bye.
FF7 - June 21, 2007 07:33 AM (GMT)

Ditto. I find turning it on and off to be too much of a hassle and besides it saves time when you get up to get on the computer.
Patrick - June 23, 2007 10:18 PM (GMT)
I put mine on "Sleep" mode. So I'm all good. Just remember to shut down your monitors too!
Ian - June 24, 2007 12:07 AM (GMT)
I don't shut my monitor off... It has a sleep thing on it.
Jennifer - June 24, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
We have 8 computers in my house. We all shut them down at night.
Chickenman77 - July 17, 2007 01:09 PM (GMT)
umm..we started to shut the computer off at night....my dad said it would make the computer go faster
Music - July 17, 2007 10:58 PM (GMT)
well i have a laptop so i shut itdown every night If you leave your laptop on to long it literally lights on fire because its smaller and heats up faster.

Leaving computers on just allows for you to waste your electricity that it takes to run it, as well as allows for the possibility of overheating for systems in cramped areas or with poor cooling systems, or both. Not only that, but the more a computer, like any machine, is used, the faster it wears down, so if you leave it on, in a way, you're taking away lifespan of your computer. Or, seperate parts, so to speak. But the part to really be concerned about, in that instance, would be the power supply.
Apart from that, the more a computer runs, the more it's fans do, and thus, the more dust and debri you allow it to collect while you're not even using it. Leaving it on from time to time doesn't hurt, but leaving it on all the time, can do more damage than meets the eye, until something eventually goes out. Also, if you don't even restart it often, then you could be running your virtual memory pretty low, and that's not good either.

I only leave mine open when I'm downloading a huge file (bittorrent ftw)
Maxen von Bismarck - August 20, 2007 03:23 AM (GMT)
I turn off when I'm not using it, so maybe once or twice a day.
M2MAdmin - August 20, 2007 01:01 PM (GMT)
I turn my computer off. I don't like to leave it on.

I turn mine on in the morning then shut it down before I go to bed. I know that the power supply box can go bad so I wanna make it last. About viruses though, Ive never got one from having it turned on, Viruses come from files or websites.
benji2 - August 29, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
Sometimes i can't be bothered to turn my comp off at night but i do at times :D
whitdevil - September 5, 2007 02:15 AM (GMT)
I leave my computer on when Im downloading something from the internet etc.
Dunsparce - September 14, 2007 05:18 PM (GMT)
I often leave it on, but no all of the time.
I heard weird rumors about them setting on fire or crashing, but I think it's load of junk.
grobend123 - October 4, 2007 11:46 PM (GMT)

I leave my computer on every night, I just put it on sleep. ::cool::

I turn off my computer or leave it on standbye mode even though ist so much slower when you turn it off then on but hey it saves electricity, your computer doesnt burn i ts cuircuts, your safe from hacker (sometimes) because a hacker cant exactly hack into a turned off computer unless it has complete control and can leave the system on and appear as if it would of been of but still
Sahil - February 22, 2008 03:51 AM (GMT)
Wow.. what a waste of electric city..
way to go...ppl
mr.swartz - February 22, 2008 04:03 AM (GMT)

i got told that if you use a monster power surge it filters your electricity way better which makes your computer work good for longer.
Nc - February 22, 2008 05:56 AM (GMT)
My computer always stays on. Gets rebooted when I update.
Ian - February 22, 2008 11:50 AM (GMT)
Yeah, same with me. I shut my PC off just cause I have a lot of big fans in there and it's like a plane taking off. But I leave my MacBook on all the time.

You should get a laptop cooler because laptops dont get much air and get hot fairly fast.
Jon - February 27, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
I leave my laptop on standby. There really is no reason for me shut my off.
packmule - April 10, 2008 10:26 PM (GMT)
I have been told to leave it on and also advised to turn the computer off. At this point I'm not sure who the hell to believe.
Ian C - April 10, 2008 11:38 PM (GMT)
I turn mine off at night, but I generally use my laptop as a desktop computer so it's just part of the routine I guess.
I've heard both turn it off or leave it on as well though.
Willow Vampire - April 18, 2008 10:35 AM (GMT)
I don't think it makes a difference, although I always shut mine down to save electrcity and so I don't hear it buzzing in the night, it's not bad for your machine to leave it on though.
