Do you support uniforms, or not? Why?
I don't support uniforms. I think everyone is their own person, unique and original. If we all had to wear the same clothes, everyone would just look alike. I find myself picturing people for their personality, as well as what they look like. I can remember someone for instance, "Jess - Crazy, fun, bright outfits" If we were all stuck in dull outfits or boring uniforms that you couldn't add to, no one would be themselves.
I do in a way support them though. For the fact that all people don't have money to afford good clothes, and it helps mellow things out. I'm sure bullying would be reduced because everyone would look the same.
What do you think?
It's funny how we cry out about individuality as a society, and yet children are oppressed and disallowed to show their true colours. And it couldn't come at a worse time: when they are learning about the world. Personally the controversy over bullying due to clothing is not something to be snubbed, and as far as I'm concerned using uniforms to dismiss the issue is pathetic, irresponsible and an abuse of law. Not only does it not stop bullying, it doesn't even remotely address the issue on a social scale. All it does is narrow the field with which a bully may taunt and make a child's life miserable; they are unreasonable people, they need only the fact you breathe oxygen to come after you.
On such terms, we should be striving to be a less material orientated society, one that appreciates human beings and prefers character and skill over dress sense and colours. As far as self-expression goes; what is to be gained by choking a teenager's ability to express themselves? More over, teenagers need to be allowed to explore themselves. Though clothes are just clothes to some, everyone's clothing does say something about them - sometimes little, sometimes much. Some use it knowingly to express themselves, others merely wear that which is comfortable or looks good. It seems that this understanding is often taken to new heights and thus fashion lures people into a world where self-image is everything.
Anyway, school aside, uniforms do have their use, generally in the workplace. Luckily we don't have a uniform where I work (because it's an office :P) but it's helpful for people to discern an ordinary fellow from a shop assistant or clerk and uniforms do this by using a standardised method of identification.
So yeah, uniforms do have their use, but like anything they can be misused and to my mind school uniforms are just a way of sweeping problems under the carpet. :/
Uniforms can come in handy, to be sure. Imagine a world where no one is being made fun of for the way they dress. A world where you can use the time in the morning you usually use to plan your wardrobe for something else. However as all good things, this world comes at a price. Little to no individuality. Although you'll never hear clothing-related insults, you will also not hear clothing-related compliments. No more "That looks good on you." or "That's a cute top." (As a guy, I hear that one ALL the time, believe me.)
I believe the entire reason we have so many different styles and trends is to express a person's inner self. Clothes are not just protection from the harsh winds of Siberia anymore, they're a decoration for your body. And if everyone is decorated the same, then no one is decorated. Uniforms have their ups and they have their downs, without a shadow of a doubt. I suppose it's up to the school district and the parents to decide in the end though.
