A police car flipped over just after 1:30 p.m. today while driving northbound on Park Avenue, pinning the officer's arm and shoulder underneath the vehicle, according to a passerby at the accident scene.

Police at the scene identified the driver of the squad car as Officer Daniel Hoppe, who was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment.

Hoppe's condition was unavailable Sunday afternoon, but witnesses at the scene said he left the scene conscious. "They said (Hoppe) was talking" when rescue workers removed him from the car and took him to the hospital, Kathy Hoagland said.

Hoppe was driving on Park Avenue near Avon Avenue when the accident occurred.

Hoagland had just pulled out of her driveway at 2704 Park Ave. with her daughter, Amanda, 13, in the car, and was headed south when she said she saw Hoppe's police car coming at her from the opposite direction, in her lane.

"All I know is, there was no car, and then the police car was right there," Kathy Hoagland said.

Hoppe then swerved and drove into some small rocks along the edge of the street, Amanda Hoagland said.

The police car flipped over three or four times, Kathy Hoagland said.

Hoagland's husband, Chris Hoagland, said he heard the accident happen and came outside to see what was happening. Hoppe's vehicle was turned on its side, stopped by a large tree at the edge of the Hoaglands' yard, Chris Hoagland said.

"His arm and shoulder were pinned underneath the car," Chris Hoagland said. "(Kathy Hoagland) just said, 'It's a cop - call 911.'"

I've been at the hospital for the past two days and he's doing fine. Thank God he got out okay.

Wow, that's gotta be scary. I couldn't image being flipped 3-4 times. I'm glad he's alright though. Any idea when he'll be released?

Wow!

I'm glad that he's okay, I hope he's well.

Thank God for that :)

South Plainfield. I had no idea you were a New Jersean. :)

As for the release date, it'll probably be another couple of days, considering that they still haven't given him an MRI.

Sounds like the cop was going to hit someone, but quickly steered himself off the road.

Is that about right? :question::
