For some reason I'm learning about Jews for Jesus in one of my Judaics classes. We watched a video today about them, and there are some problems I have. I don't care if these people want to make a new relgion called Jewstianity or something like that, but I do have a problem with them labeling themselves as "Jewish Christains." They are different religions, they take Jewish customs and make them Christain, which perverts Tradition, and they make other Jews vulnerable to identity change without realization.
The main difference between Judaism and Christianity is that Jews don't believe that the Messiah has come. We don't believe that only Jesus (or JFJ would say Yeshua, meaning Savior in Hebrew) can attone for our sins. We don't believe in the trinity. The list can go on and on. But basically, calling yourself Jewish and Christain is misleading to other people. They are not really one in the same religion, just because Jesus was Jewish as was his mother. And btw, Jesus never called himself "God" or the "Messiah"; it was his disciples who wrote the New Testament.
Another problem I have with Jews for Jesus is the way they approach Jewish customs. For example, at a Passover Seder/Meal, we have three Matzot, which are unleavend bread. One is for the Priests of the Temple, one is for the general descendants of Levi (who were the Temple assistants), and one for the rest of the Israeli population. That is one of many customs that has been around for thousands of generations. Yet these "Jews" say that no, these stand for the Trinity. There is no historical nor cultural background for any customs like these, and in fact perverts thousands of years of Tradition with no valid reason. Even a the Reverend who was featured on the show said this was completely wrong, for that reason. As you can expect, Christian beliefs probably get screwed up somewhere around there.
The third problem I have with Jews for Jesus is that they mislead vulnerable Jews to converting, without those Jews really know what's going on. Most people that have joined Jews for Jesus grew up a very secular Jewish life, but didn't want to leave their identity. Then they decided that they can still believe in Jesus and believe in Judaism. Knowing from experience, they go to other secular Jews and say, "hey you can still be Jewish and believe in Jesus". These poor Jews do so without any knowledge of their tradition. It's sad. I would definetely say that parents need to do a stronger job of educating their children, but it's just wrong what they're doing, in my opinion.
Christianity is like an expansion to jewism. We believe everything you do, except we believe some more (Jesus, Trinity etc.) And the fact that the old customs are replaced by new ones. Therefore these so called Jews for Jesus (whom I never heard of) are basically Christians :S
I've never understood why they aren't Christains, because yes Christianity use to be Judaism, so isn't it same here?
I guess they're christians so used to there Jewish customs that they still want to do them.
Be Jewish law, you can't ne a Jew for Jesus
And the only substantial and solid difference between Jews and Christians are that Christians believe that Jesus was the son of god.
Perhaps, Jews for Jesus believe that Jesus was the son of god, but he wasn't the messiah. I am not sure, but it would be interesting to interview a Jew for Jesus.
Can we get someone to join FS?
Haha in a packet we got about Jews for Jesus, there was an AIM thing for this one Jew for Jesus and my friend IM'ed her, but wouldn't talk to him when she found out he was only 14.
