In my school, teachers told us by perhaps the year 2010 or something, this law will be enforced. Whats it mean? Our teachers told us that it means students will have to work up to their grade level, all of them. That means mentally challenged and disabled students have to perform to an ability that they cannot. As for other students who are in honors students, it means they have to perform below their ability. This is what our teachers are telling us. I'm not sure the whole truth behind it. What do you think?
My older sister Andrea, who is studying to become an elementary school level teacher, had to work with students with disabilities. Obviously, they were working at a grade level lower than that of a regular student. At the time they were memorising what a "five cent nickel" was.
The teacher of these students is getting them involved with volunteer work, ie. bagging at Publix for free. This is good, because people normally do not want to hire someone with a mental disability, because they think that the person will just be a burden. But after seeing the students working as volunteers, they realised that the students, for the most part, were very capable of getting the job done. Some of them got paying jobs.
Back to the topic, I think each individual student has a different learning speed, and different learning techniques. Some people exceed expectations while others struggle to meet them. It all depends on the student.
